The Swindon & Cricklade Railway is a Partner in the Cricklade Country Way Project. Designed to enhance and create outdoor leisure opportunities between Swindon and Cricklade, the Project aims to link the two towns by a "leisure corridor" with rail and canal transport and alternatives of cycle ways and footpaths, plus a Community Forest.
Big Lottery Fund
The Partners are hopeful that their bid for support from the Big Lottery Fund's Living Landmarks scheme will be successful.
The Cricklade Country Way bid has already been awarded
£ 250,000 to finance detailed costings and proposals, and these have now been submitted to the Fund. A decision is expected later this year.

The Railway
The Railway's objectives, and its progress to date, are outlined elsewhere on the web site. It will be seen that much has already been achieved, and that progress is being made towards its wider goals.
However, success with the Lottery bid would, for the first time, allow completion to be subject to predictable timescales.
With the completion of the Canal and other projects, it would also allow the Railway to share in and contribute to the wider range of visitors that the Leisure Corridor should attract.

The Canal
Reconstruction of the North Wiltshire Canal would provide a waterway between Swindon and Cricklade with four locks and a new visitor mooring basin.
The Canal would also extend to the Cotswold Water Park and the Thames at Latton, potentially bringing more visitors to the area.

Cricklade
Cricklade would benefit from a new Visitor Centre. As the northern destination of the Railway and a canal running from West Swindon, it would benefit from additional visitors to this historic town.

Open spaces
The Project would link Mouldon Hill Country Park, the Community Forest and the Cotswold Water Park.
With the walking and cycling options via Cycle Route 45 and the canal towpath, the open spaces would contribute to a highly attractive mix of outdoor leisure.

The next stage
For the Railway, the next stage in the Bid involves the preparation of detailed costings and proposals.
These will include the proposed designs for new stations at Mouldon Hill Country Park and Cricklade, as well as for bridge works and civil engineering along the remaining length of the railway.
In preparing these plans, there is also the need for the Railway to decide in detail how it will operate as part of the overall Cricklade Country Way project. The opportunity to co-operate with the other partners to bring canal, railway and other facilities together in a linked group of complementary leisure attractions is seen as a particularly exciting opportunity.
Costings and proposals will be presented to the Big Lottery Fund's Living Landmarks Scheme during the earlier part of next year.
